Chekhov sure hit the nail on the head here... the way I understand it is that he wants to convey the message that a crisis isn't too bad altogether because it keeps things moving, makes you take actions into your own hands, whereas a monotonous day-to-day living is the thing that makes you grow old much quicklier... just a guess, though. I haven't yet had the chance to read Checkov in russian, I guess lots of things also depend on the way it was translated. Maybe valjusha can provide the original? i take it from your name that you are russian...just another guess though
